Pneumonia is an illness that can affect one or both lungs and causes inflammation of the air sacs in those lungs. It is possible for the air sacs to become filled with fluid or pus, which can result in a cough that is productive of phlegm or pus, fever, chills, and difficulty breathing. Pneumonia can be caused by many different kinds of microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi.
