Pleural Effusion
The accumulation of extra fluid between the layers of the pleura outside the lungs is known medically as pleural effusion. This condition is also referred to as "water on the lungs." The lungs and the interior of the chest cavity are lined with thin membranes called the pleura, which serve to lubricate and assist breathing. The pleura are also known as the lung lining.
